Historiography Portal Canadian art refers to the visual including paintingphotographyand printmaking as well as plastic arts such as sculpture originating from the geographical area of contemporary Canada.
The first unit will begin by studying the stylistic innovations and thematic differences from those of the French Academy introduced by the Impressionists; and the second unit will examine the avant garde response from Neo- and Post-Impressionists, as well as the Nabis and Symbolists.
Then, during the third unit of the course, we will examine the experimentation with abstraction and color theory practiced by turn of the twentieth-century avant-garde art movements — namely, Cubism and the politicized utopian movements that developed in response to World War I and the Russian Revolution — in particular, the artistic reactions of the Italian Futurists, the non-representational art associated with the Dutch art movement, de Stijl, and Russian experiments that took shape through Suprematism, Rayonism, and Constructivism.
In unit four, we will investigate Expressionism, both in France and Germany, as well as explore the fantastic responses to early 20C developments in psychology as expressed through Surrealism and its antecedents Dada. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, the student should have a clear sense of the differing ways in which social change and politics affected the content and production of art during the last quarter of the nineteenth- and first quarter of the twentieth century, coupled with a thorough understanding of art historical concepts of style and its development, as well as a critical awareness of changing methods and modes of art historical interpretation.
